What’s been my biggest leadership challenge?

My biggest leadership challenge was working with a client team to create and deliver a new operating model for its logistics operation and hit some very aggressive cost savings targets within 18 months.

What made it so difficult?

The business operation was under threat of being outsourced by its parent organisation, but the logistics team just didn’t believe that would happen. Even when they realised the threat was real many in the organisation just would not accept the need to radically change the way they worked.

What helped me overcome this challenge?

Creating a joint team who worked on creating a plan to identify and deliver new performance was critical. The team included people from all levels of the organisation and their understanding and ownership of the areas to change were critical to convincing those more sceptical in the team.

What did I learn?

Delivering results is not just about knowing what needs to be done. Finding a way to make people connect with a challenge, believe they can work differently and see improvements can really unlock the potential in a team. Creating visible success can be very infectious at engaging others.

What’s my style as a thinking partner?

We all face professional and personal challenges at every stage of our lives. How we can adapt, learn and change can be a joy or a pain. Whether we are making our first moves into leadership, trying to be more effective in our current role, or looking to realise the potential in our team, we all need to grow knowledge, capability and self-belief to reach our personal ambitions. I passionately believe that there is more potential in everyone to achieve their goals. 

The key to any engagement is building an environment of trust. I have learnt that once this is genuinely achieved the real conversations can begin and an environment is created where honest reflection, exploration and shaping of pragmatic action can be taken. I believe clients can probably get there themselves – but find I can accelerate their progress. More is inside all of us.

What's my professional background?

I have worked as an advisor to business leaders for over 20 years, having worked in management consulting, initially covering strategic issues and then focusing on implementing and driving change. I also established and grew a change management consulting business which operated in the UK and US.

I have worked with CEOs and leadership teams on a range of organisational challenges from creating new operating models, driving business process improvement and creating performance management cultures. I have had the opportunity to work across Europe, the Middle East and the US gaining insight into the different approaches needed in different environments.

In addition to my consulting work, I have worked at Cisco where my role was helping customers identify and adopt the benefits from emerging digital technology.

I have experience in a number of sectors including, fast-moving consumer goods, oil and gas, energy and professional services.

What do I do away from work?

Nothing beats a long bike ride with friends to decompress, clear my mind and provide a feeling of camaraderie – especially after working together to overcome some testing long-distance challenge. Dog walks with the family ensure a balance of time indoors and outside in all weathers.
