What’s been my biggest leadership challenge?

To turn around an audited out of control, heavy loss-making, number 2 in the market, mid-size company, into a sustainably profitable one with market share leadership.

What made it so difficult?

The sheer scale and complexity of the interconnected issues to fix while at the same time building a healthy future. We had to radically restructure every part of the business, change the culture and ways of working, while at the same time invest in people, innovation, and new manufacturing capabilities.

What helped me overcome this challenge?

My fellow executive team who had excellent functional skills with diverse personalities, and who were committed to the challenge and connected to the total organisation. We had open honest conversations in an atmosphere of trust, respect, and support. This enabled us to create a strong plan together and sensitively implement it.

What did I learn?

The power and joy of true team working, and how much you can change in a relatively short period of time with the right spirit and talent. Also, when you are fixing a ‘broken” business, you really learn about how a business works at a functional and emotional level.

What’s my style as a thinking partner?

I partner with clients to help enable them to achieve their goals, to be the best they can be, and to overcome any challenges along the way expediently.

I give them the space to think in an open, honest, safe, and confidential environment without judgement, carefully listening to their challenges and thoughts.

By blending best practice coaching techniques with extensive real-life executive experience, I ask questions designed to help them to discover the illusive functional and emotional root cause of their challenge and to unleash their inner creativity to define new possibilities and solutions.

I then help clients to create their own strong, practical, and measurable forward action programme that they are committed to for personal and / or organisational growth with lasting impact.

The result is an exciting transformational journey of discovery that is both enriching and energising.

What's my professional background?

I have over 30 years practical business leadership experience. Positions held include executive board member within operating companies for Unilever & Heineken, Global Account Director for WPP Kantar, and trusted advisor to companies such as Coca Cola, Ferrero, Kellogg’s, SKINS sports clothing et al. I am also a non-executive / trustee for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

I have enjoyed an extensive international career having lived and worked in 5 countries in numerous senior global, regional and local director roles often in highly matrixed structures requiring influencing leadership skills.

A constant thread throughout my work has been the delivery of strong sustainable profitable business growth often in highly challenging or turnaround situations providing me with a translatable appreciation of the challenges’ leaders face today.

This experience often required changes in strategy, structure, culture, team ways of working, and leadership styles, and the development of new go to market models, competencies, skills, and innovations amongst many other enablers.

Who have I worked for?
  • Unilever
  • Kellogg’s
  • Heineken
  • Coca Cola
  • Ferrero
  • Pro Sieben Media
  • SKINS
  • WPP Kantar
  • Battersea Dogs & Cats Home
  • Premier League
What do I do away from work?

I have a passion for animals and their well-being so I volunteer as a trustee at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and when I escape the boardroom, I can be found either in the kennels or the cattery. As a fan of sport, my wife and I enjoy playing tennis at the local club and the social life that come with that. I can also occasionally be heard making a dreadful noise on a saxophone!

What credentials and qualifications do I have?
  • Henley Business School – Professional Certificate in Coaching
  • Member, Association for Coaching
  • Portsmouth University – BA Hons Business Studies
  • International Institute for Management Development (IMD) alumni
  • National Council for Voluntary Organisations charity trustee induction training
